“The field hospital” This piece captures the way of life for pregnant slave women who were forced to work in the sugar cane fields through their third trimester of pregnancy. They would have no other option but to give birth in the fields, and the only privacy they could receive was that given to them by the nearby women who would hold out their skirts to form a circle while another would minister to the woman throughout the delivery. This became known as the "field hospital." |
